UNC-103

Duke- 82

Player of the game: Michael Jordan (32 points, 7 rebounds, 68% FG)

This day in January, Michael Jordan had his breakout game in this rivalry. Sure, “The Shot” happened a year before in the title game, but this was his coming out party against Duke.

Jordan had one of those performances we expected from him when he was in the NBA. MJ was unstoppable. 32 points on 19 shots is extremely efficient, and doing it against your chief rival is even better. And five assists is not bad for him either!

Carolina was coming off of a national title, and was ranked number three in the nation. Duke at the time was unranked. North Carolina asserted itself from the beginning, leading by eleven points at the half. They went on to drop 60 points in the second half to blow the game wide open.

This Carolina team went on to the Elite 8, before losing to 4th seeded Georgia.
