UNC- 96

Duke- 92

Player of the game: Walter Davis (31 points, 6 rebounds, 67% FG%)

Tracy McGrady had thirteen points in 33 seconds in 2004, Reggie Miller had his eight points in nine seconds, and North Carolina has its eight points in 17 seconds. North Carolina just so happened to do it without a three-point line.

The story has been told many times. North Carolina trailed 86-78.

It all began with Bobby Jones. Jones was fouled, stepped up to the foul line, and knocked in two. 86-80. Duke could not get the ball in bounds and Walter Davis stole the ball. Davis then passed to John Kuester, who proceeded to hit the layup. 86-82.

The Heels deflected the next in bounds pass of Duke, and Bobby Jones hit the layup this time. 86-84. Duke then got the ball in bounds, and missed the front end of a one-and-one, leaving the rest to history.

The great Woody Durham on the call.

Walter Davis from deep! In today’s game, this shot would have won the game, but with no three-point line, the Heels forced overtime.

In overtime, the Heels went on to win 96-92 in this all time classic!
