North Carolina State Wolfpack
Head coach: Mark Gottfried. Career record: 396-226. Record at N.C. State: 122-78. Gottfried is in his sixth season as the Wolfpack’s head coach.
Gottfried was as an assistant coach for the 1995 NCAA champions UCLA Bruins. As Murray State’s head coach, Gottfried won the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) regular season season championship from 1996-98 and the OVC tournament from 1997-98. As Alabama’s head coach, he won the SEC regular season in 2002 and 2005. Gottfried was the OVC Coach of the Year in 1998 and the SEC Coach of the Year in 2002.
As N.C. State’s coach, Gottfried has taken the Wolfpack to the Sweet Sixteen in 2012 and 2015.
Best Former Player: David Thompson. This is the player who Michael Jordan idolized as a kid. Thompson led the Wolfpack to their first national championship in 1974. He was a three-time first-team All-American and three-time ACC Player of the Year from 1973-75. Thompson was the consensus 1975 National Player of the Year, also. Thompson was the overall number one pick in the 1975 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. He was a four-time NBA All-Star (1977-79, 1983), two-time member of the NBA First-Team (1977-78) and NBA All-Star game MVP (1975).
Last season: N.C. State finished the season with a 16-17 record, 5-13 in the ACC. The Wolfpack finished the season in 13th place.
This season: North Carolina State has an overall 14-12 record and 3-10 ACC record. The Wolfpack have upset wins against Pittsburgh and Duke. Since beating the Blue Devils 84-82, the Wolfpack have lost five consecutive games.
Currently, they are not projected to play in this year’s NCAA tournament. The only way they could make the post-season tournament would be to win this year’s ACC Tournament.
