#2 – Charles Scott , UNC (1967-70)
Before we start his list of achievements, Charles Scott prefers to be called “Charles,” not “Charlie.”
His presence in North Carolina’s basketball program corresponds to what Jackie Robinson achieved for the integration of baseball.
Charles Scott was the first Black scholarship athlete at the University of North Carolina. On a larger scale, Scott was the first Black scholarship athlete at any major university in the South. He was the first UNC basketball player on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
Scott ranks:
- third in career scoring average (tied with Bob Lewis with 22.1 points per game)
- ranks second and ninth in most consecutive 30-point games (four in 1969-70 and two in 1969-70)
- ranks second in most consecutive 20-point games (13 in 1969-70)
- ranks fifth for most career 20-point games (50)
- most points scored in ACC Championship game (40 against Duke in 1969)
- ranks eighth in most points scored in a single season (714 in 1968-69)
- has three of the highest single-game scoring records ever at UNC, including of 43 points against Wake Forest in 1970; 41 points against Virginia in 1970; 40 points against Duke in 1969
- ranks second in most 40-point games (43, 41, 40)
- ranks sixth all-time in total points (2,007 points).
