UNC Football: 5 reasons the Tar Heels can win a title
Reason No. 5 – The chips falling into place
Let’s be honest.
North Carolina has talent on both sides of the ball. However, UNC still needs help to win the national championship. In other words, several things will have to place for UNC to even make the college playoff system.
The obvious one is that North Carolina has to win the ACC championship. This includes upsetting Florida State during the regular season and beating Miami. In addition to winning the ACC title, Carolina has to have a perfect record to make the College Football Playoff.
There is a chance that UNC could make the CFP with one loss, but you must remember that UNC does not get the same amount of respect that Clemson and Florida State get.
Clemson and FSU are ranked in the top five this season, along with Oklahoma and Ohio State. In addition, both Clemson and FSU have a history of being powerhouse football teams. UNC does not, although the Tar Heels had several teams in the 1990s that were ranked top 10 and as high as No. 3 in the nation.
Last season, UNC started off the season with a defeat to South Carolina, then they won 11 consecutive games until their loss to Clemson in the ACC Championship. UNC must win all of their games to make College Football Playoff. Having an undefeated regular season will get UNC the necessary respect they need to have a chance at a national title.
National championships tend to run through the SEC conference. From 2006-2013 and 2015, at least one SEC football was in the national championship. Moreover, the SEC team won national championship as well.
Last year’s national championship indicates how close an ACC team came to winning the championship. Although Clemson lost to Alabama 45-40, Clemson was the overall No. 1-ranked team and they were undefeated going into the title game.
North Carolina needs to duplicate what Clemson did last season. The first game of the season against Georgia will be a barometer for how good this Carolina team is. If UNC blows out Georgia, then the rest of the nation needs to take notice on North Carolina.
If UNC wins the ACC Championship in addition to being undefeated, they must prepare themselves for the likes of Alabama, Oklahoma, Ohio State, LSU, Stanford, Michigan or Notre Dame.
