UNC Basketball: Five Coaches worth considering to succeed Roy Williams
Tony Bennett
Fellow ACC coach Tony Bennett would be another great choice to succeed Roy Williams at North Carolina.
Bennett started his career at Washington State, taking over for his father. As the Cougars leader, Bennett won 26 games in each of his first two seasons, tying a school record.
During the 2007-08 season, the Cougars reached the Sweet 16, dropping their match-up against North Carolina in the East Regional Semifinals.
Shortly after, Bennett left Washington State to coach the Virginia Cavaliers. Bennett was tasked with rebuilding the Cavaliers basketball program. He has done a masterful job transforming Virginia from an average team to a perennial basketball power.
These past three seasons, Bennett has led the Cavaliers to a combined record of 89-19. During this time his club has reached the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight.
This recent success has turned Virginia into a serious competitor on the recruiting trail. ESPN rates their incoming recruiting class 8th best in the nation. This class includes Tony Bennett’s first ever McDonald’s All-American, Kyle Guy.
Bennett is a respected coach who knows ACC basketball, and is schematically advanced. Given the opportunity, Bennett would thrive as the North Carolina Tar Heels head coach.
