NFL Draft: Will any UNC players be selected?
Jeff Schoettmer, linebacker
In the last five drafts and average of 32 LBs are drafted each year. Schoettmer currently ranks as the 47th best ILB in the draft.
I wrote a before the season piece on Schoettmer back in August. Jeff has a great nose for the ball, but his lack of athleticism had always been his downfall. In college you can get away with that, in the pros not so much. Schoettmer screams practice squad player at best in the NFL. Don’t get me wrong a lot of those guys eventually make teams and Jeff could easily be a special teams specialist for many years. Though a lot of those guys also never see more than a practice field as well. Given Schoettmer’s work effort, I see the former more so than the latter. And honestly what would be more fitting for the former walk on?
Now you are probably wondering where are players like Jessie Rodgers, Romar Morris, and Shakeel Rashad? Who knows? The insiders aren’t always right and you never know when a team may fall in love with a player or two. But for the most part, these guys will be looking at undrafted contracts, a lot like Williams, Davis, Thomason, and Schoettmer might. Thankfully Turner looks like a draftable player, so the Heels shouldn’t go two drafts completely shut out.
