UNC Basketball: Latest Harry Giles Recruiting Updates
By John Bauman
After getting a commitment from Brandon Robinson earlier this week, Roy Williams can now turn more of his attention to inking a third member for the Tar Heels’ 2016 recruiting class.
One of the Tar Heels’ targets is Harry Giles, the number one high school player in the country according to ESPN. Giles is from North Carolina and was born in Winston-Salem, where Wake Forest is. He will be playing his senior season of high school ball at Oak Hill Academy in Virginia. Let’s take a look at some of the latest news about Giles’ recruitment from Twitter and from around the internet.
Back in July, Giles released his Top 5 schools on Twitter.
247 Sports’ Crystal Ball predictions
have Harry Giles going to Duke, with Carolina and Wake finishing in second and third place. However, it is still early and a lot could change within the crystal ball as Giles starts to make his official visits.
Why are all five schools going after Giles so hard? Check out his summer mixtape from Courtside Films.
Watching these highlights, you see an extremely talented athlete and a great scorer. Giles is certainly gifted and the program that lands him will be very lucky.
Giles hasn’t given many clues as to which way he is leaning. In his most recent USA Today Blog posted on September 22nd, Giles did outline his plan for his official visits this fall.
"I had a great visit to Wake Forest last weekend!I’m going to Kansas for Late Night in the Phog. After that I’m going to Kentucky for Big Blue Madness, North Carolina and I’ll end up at Duke for Halloween weekend!I can’t wait! I know all of the visits are gonna be crazy!"
He also gave some insight on his views of the coaches of the schools he has been looking at.
"Coach (Roy) Williams and Coach (Bill) Self came by last week and I had great meetings with both of them. Coach Self is just a cool guy and Coach Williams is cool too. I have great relationships with both of them. Of course Coach (Danny) Manning is my guy too and Coach (John) Calipari was in last week and we had a great talk. It was definitely the best talk that I’ve ever had with Coach Cal. It was just me and him and no one else."

It is a good sign that he thinks Coach Roy is “cool,” and that he has a good relationship with Ol’ Roy. Each of the five programs on his list have really excellent coaches, and Giles’ decision may not come down to who the best coach is but rather which coach he has the best relationship with.
Giles’ decision also may have a lot to do about where his friend Jayson Tatum ends up. Tatum committed to Duke, and the friendship between Giles and Tatum is strong. Tatum certainly will be in Giles’ ear, telling him to join him at Duke.
The next big events in Giles’ recruitment will be those official visits throughout the month of October. Stay tuned to Keeping It Heel for more updates about Giles’ visits and about the rest of the 2016 basketball recruiting class!
