2008 was the second of three appearance by Roy Williams in the Final Four as the head coach of the Tar Heels. Led by a familiar cast of Ty Lawson, Tyler Hansbrough and Wanye Ellington, UNC went 32-2 in the lead up to the NCAA Tournament, winning an ACC title and dropping just two games to Duke and Maryland, both at home.

Carolina was a one seed again in the East Regional and marched easily to the Final Four, defeating Mount St. Marys, Arkansas, Washington State and Louisville on the way to San Antonio.

In Texas, however, the Heels lost again to the darn Kansas Jayhawks in the Final Four. UNC can take solace in the fact that Kansas would go on to win the National Championship that year, so at least Carolina lost to a winner.
UNC would channel the pain from that loss into a National Championship a year later.
