5. 28 points in 3 minutes 49 seconds against Liberty

Background: In the opening game of the season, Carolina was inexplicably losing to FCS team Liberty 22-21 with 9:25 left in the third quarter.  The Flames had just returned a fumble for a touchdown and had were gaining momentum.  The Heels needed a spark, and they got it, scoring 28 unanswered points to break the game open and seal the victory.  Mack Hollins had a 33-yard touchdown catch before Jeff Schoettmer intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown.  After a Liberty turnover, Marquise Williams ran for a score and then Jack Tabb finished the barrage with a 4-yard catch after another Liberty turnover.

Greatness Score: 6.5/10

This stretch was arguably the best that Carolina’s defense played all season.  They forced three turnovers in three drives including a pick-six.  This stretch ensured that the Heels would not be upset by Liberty.  However, the degree of difficulty is just not that high.  No offense to Liberty, but they were just not as good as UNC.  UNC should have been able to blow Liberty out for the entire game, not just for four minutes.  While nobody expected a turnover every possession, six forced turnovers against a team like Liberty should not be that shocking.
