2) Ed Cota #5 (1996-2000)
He had the vision. He had the finishing ability. But most of all, he had the flare. Off of talent alone, you could make a case for him as the best point guard in North Carolina history. He would find his teammates on a fast-break or in the half-court, using two hands or one hand, between the legs or behind the back. It simply didn’t matter.
To understand the flare he had in his game, take a look at this YouTube video.
Over his career, Ed Cota averaged 9.5 ppg and 7.7 apg. He led the ACC in assists in three different seasons at North Carolina. He finished his career ranked third in NCAA history with 1,030 assists for the Tar Heels, via sports-reference.com.
He is well-known for his floater, referred to as the “Cota flota”, as his way of finishing over taller defenders when he drove in the lane. His flare and the attention he drew made UNC greats like Vince Carter and Antawn Jamison look good, and his overall talent makes him one of the best point guards in North Carolina history.
