#3 – Dick Crum (1978-1987) Record: 72-41 (.633) – ACC Coach of the Year 1980 – 1 Conference championship

Dick Crum holds the record for most career victories as a coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels football

team with 72. He also has the best bowl record of UNC coaches at 4-2. He won the Gator Bowl (1979 & 1981), Bluebonnet Bowl (1980) and the Sun Bowl (1982).Prior to coming to UNC he coached at the University of Miami for four seasons. He went 34-10-1 at Miami including two victories in bowl games.

Early on he had a great deal of success for the Tar Heels. His teams went 50-20-1 during the first six years of his run in UNC. The team struggled in his final four seasons having just one season with a winning record. After ten seasons as the head coach he resigned in 1987. He is also the man responsible for recruiting, in my opinion, the greatest pass rusher in the history of the NFL, Lawrence Taylor. Had the second half of his tenure in North Carolina gone more successfully, I would have ranked him higher on the list.  In the final four seasons of his run he finished below .500 in three of those seasons. He wasn’t able to find any success in his post-Carolina career as he went 7-26 for Kent State University from 1988-1990.
