UNC Basketball: Third “All-Roy” Team

Over the next three days, Keeping It Heel will reveal its First, Second and Third “All-Roy” Teams for Carolina Basketball. “All-Roy” teams are modeled after the All-American and All-ACC teams, but they are made up of only players from Roy Williams’s 11 season at UNC. Keeping It Heel selected the 15 best players from Roy Williams tenure and put them on three teams. The teams will be revealed over the course of this week on KeepingItHeel.com. Made sure you give your opinion on our “All-Roy” teams in the comments and on Facebook and Twitter!

We are going to start off our countdown of the top 15 players in the Roy Williams era with honorable mentions for the All-Roy team as well as the third team. Leading the third team are two current players, James Michael McAdoo and Marcus Paige, along with three players from teams in years past.

Third Team All-Roy

Guard: Marcus Paige

Career Stats: 65 games played, 40.0 FG%, 86.6 FT%, 12.2 points, 3.0 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 7.4 career win shares
Awards: 2013 ACC All-Freshman Team, 2014 Academic All-American
Accomplishments: Two year starter, to be continued

You could make a case for either Bobby Frasor or Marcus Ginyard in this spot, but I firmly believe that by the time Paige is done at UNC, he will warrant at least a 3rd team All-Roy selection. Paige has been so good for Carolina this year, by far their most valuable player. A strong NCAA tournament for Paige, and he could start creeping up into second team territory.

Guard: Danny Green

Career Stats: 145 games played, 45.5 FG%, 84.5 FT%, 9.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, 37.5 3P%, 16.8 career win shares
Awards: 2008-2009 2nd in the ACC in Steals (67)
Accomplishments: Four years at Carolina, 2009 National Champion

Green became “famous” after his strong performance in the NBA Finals, but he was famous at North Carolina too for his pregame dances to Jump Around at every home game. He could also play a little bit, averaging almost 10 points in his career at UNC. Green deserves a spot on the third team All-Roy squad.

Guard/Forward: James Michael McAdoo

Career stats: 104 games played, 46.2 FG%, 56.2 FT%, 11.3 points, 5.9 boards, 1.2 steals, 8.5 career win shares
Awards: 2013 Second Team All-ACC, 2009 USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year
Accomplishments: Three years at Carolina, to be continued

As frustrating McAdoo is sometimes to watch, he is still a really good basketball player overall for Carolina. His three years at UNC warrant a third team selection for sure.

Forward: Deon Thompson

Career Stats: 152 games, 49.4 FG%, 65.6 FT%, 9.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 13.3 career win shares
Awards: Career NCAA games played: T-3rd place, 152 games
Accomplishments: Four years at Carolina, 2009 National champion

Deon was UNC’s rock back in 2010 and really all throughout his career. He was a dependable, solid player in Carolina Blue and put up solid stats in all of his four years at UNC. A national championship in 2009 helped his case as well for third team.

Forward: Jawad Williams

Career Stats: 128 games played, 48.7 FG%, 72.4 FT%, 12.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 12.5 career win shares
Awards: 2004-05 Second best True Shooting Percentage (.636)
Accomplishments: Four year starter, 2005 National Champion

Jawad’s class of seniors- including Williams, Melvin Scott and Jackie Manuel- really brought the program back in 2004-05 along with new head coach Roy Williams. Jawad was a starter on the National Championship team in 05 and had a solid career for Carolina, worthy of a third team selection.

Honorable Mention: Reggie Bullock, Marcus Ginyard, Bobby Frasor, Jackie Manuel, Marvin Williams, Ed Davis
