Feb. 5Th, 1992: #9 UNC 75, #1 Duke 73 (The Bloody Montross Game): The Blue Devils were the defending national champions on a 23-game winning streak last losing to the Heels in the 91 ACC Tournament final. The Heels came out and played their best game of the season in another intense, physical battle between the rivals. Both Eric Montross and Bobby Hurley would get cut and bloody in the first half, Hurley would also break his foot later in the game.

The outstanding foul shooting from the Heels was able to keep Duke from taking the lead as Lattner missed two chances to tie the game in the last 25 seconds. Of course the lasting image from this game and perhaps the entire rivalry was Montross standing at the free throw line with blood running down his face looking more like a prize fighter than a college basketball player.
