March 8th, 1975: The 1970s saw the Wolfpack enjoy their greatest success thanks to all-time greats David Thompson and Tom Burleson along with a good supporting cast. They had enjoyed a 57-1 record over two years with two undefeated ACC regular seasons, two ACC Tournament titles and the 1974 national title. Led by freshman point Phil Ford the Tar Heels would upset the defending champions 70-66, Ford would become the first freshman to win tournament MVP with 24 points in the win. The loss for State ended the career of David Thompson who lost his last two games against UNC after winning his first nine games against the Tar Heels. The loss also ended their chance to defend their national title. The win sent the Tar Heels back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 4 years and began a streak of 27 straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
