No fiery speeches needed for Tar Heels to ‘finish off’ ECU
Coming out with a vengeance to start the second half, the Tar Heels held ECU to just 71 total yards, forced the game’s only turnover and overwhelmed quarterback Shane Carden with six of their seven sacks to break open a close game and cruise to a 27-6 victory at Kenan Stadium. It was an effort that was even more thorough than the score would indicate. (Wilmington Star News)
Slain UNC student’s sister: ‘They’re going to get the right person’
The parents of a slain University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student say they are holding onto faith that their daughter’s life was a blessing to the world and that justice will be served in her death. Faith Danielle Hedgepeth, 19, was found dead in her Hawthorne View apartment on Sept. 7. No suspects have been named, and police have said little other than they don’t believe the crime was random. DeCock: Sack-happy Tar Heels enjoy defensive resurgence
Someone is going to have to explain how getting Giovani Bernard back made the North Carolina defense so much better. The Tar Heels recorded seven sacks — six in the second half, five in the third quarter, one forcing a fumble in the shadow of the goal line — as they pitched a second-half shutout, turning a four-point halftime lead into a 27-6 win over East Carolina. UNC-ECU Coaches Quotes
Larry Fedora: “We’ve got a much better taste in our mouth tonight than we have had. I thought our guys played well. I would say we played a complete game. We played hard the entire game. You’ve got to give a lot of props to our defense, the way they played in the second half. Anytime you’re going to get seven sacks, you hold somebody to 230 yards of total offense, they did a tremendous job.” (Tar Heel Illustrated)
UNC-ECU Postgame Notes
QB Bryn Renner set a school record by throwing for the most passing yards in consecutive games by going 27 of 43 for 321 yards. He threw for a career-high 363 yards a week ago at Louisville. The 684 passing yards in two straight games is the highest mark in school history. The previous record was 683 shared by T.J. Yates (2007 – vs. East Carolina and Virginia) and Darian Durant (2002 – vs. Arizona State and NC State). (GoHeels.com)
Three Things: Carolina 27, ECU 6
After entering the game with just six sacks, Carolina picked up seven sacks against East Carolina. The Tar Heel defensive line was in the backfield most of the day. The pressure came from numerous different sources, as six different Tar Heels picked up a full sack, and Kareem Martin and Devonte Brown each had a half-sack. (Tar Heel Monthly)
Eric Montross on UNC problems: ‘We have to deal with it’
Eric Montross, once a University of North Carolina basketball star and now a school fundraiser and basketball analyst, predicted UNC will bounce back from revelations of academic misconduct among student athletes. “When something’s wrong, we have to deal with it,” Montross said at a meeting of the Salisbury Kiwanis Club Friday. How Roy Williams’ Surgery Affects North Carolina in 2012-13
We don’t know much about Roy Williams’ surgery except that it happened, his recovery has begun and it will probably affect him to start the 2012-13 season. According to the Associated Press via the Boston Herald, the North Carolina head coach underwent surgery on Wednesday to “remove a tumor from his right kidney,” and he might still require surgery to remove another one from his left kidney. The report states that he could be “on the sideline” when UNC’s 2012-13 campaign begins. The Tar Heels’ upcoming schedule has not yet been released, but according to the AP, practice is slated to begin on October 13. Bleacher Report
