Andrew Wiggins claims UNC offer
Apparently Roy Williams offered Andrew Wiggins a scholarship over a year ago. Wiggins’ coach relayed the information to Clint Jackson and he provided this tweet: “According to his HS coach, Rob Fulford…Andrew Wiggins has a UNC offer and has had one since last year.” Roy Williams and company were rumored to be watching Wiggins work out Thursday along with Kentucky coach John Calipari and Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton. Maryland Upsets #6 Tar Heels In ACC Opener
Sixth-ranked North Carolina was upset 2-1 Thursday night in the two team’s Atlantic Coast Conference openers Thursday night before a crowd of 1,500 fans at Ludwig Field. The win was the third in a row for Maryland over the Tar Heels as they have recorded regular-season wins over Carolina in 2010, 2011 and 2012. The past two wins have come by 2-1 scores at Ludwig Field. (GoHeels.com)
Playing status of UNC’s Gio Bernard left to guesswork
Considering the way coaches Larry Fedora and Tom O’Brien dodge the issue of reporting the health and availability of their players even when they’re supposed to, it’s doubtful – or at the very least, questionable – that we’d learn the playing status of Tar Heels running back Giovani Bernard and Wolfpack safety Earl Wolff until game time Saturday regardless of the circumstances. UNC’s recovering defense faces QB force in Bridgewater
The Tar Heels on Saturday play at No. 19 Louisville, which has been known far more for its defense than its offense since Charlie Strong arrived as the head coach in 2010. Even so, the Cardinals’ once-stagnant offense has shown signs of life early in the season – mainly thanks to sophomore quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. (Raleigh News & Observer)
Rejected NCAA Proposal Makes UNC Case More Complex
So if UNC escapes punishment, which is far from a settled question at this point, it will be in part to what happened almost four years ago in Washington D.C. at the NCAA Convention. But it could reopen the old debate over central administration vs. institutional home rule. And it may do so right in the heart of the autonomy that institutions hold so dear. UNC needs a plan to stop Bridgewater
It is the No. 19 Cardinals who look formidable this season behind sophomore quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who has played pretty close to perfect. Louisville has scored 30-plus points in consecutive games and is favored to beat a Tar Heels team that lost a heartbreaker to Wake Forest last week. (ESPN.com)
Lessons in Adversity
It took nine months after Larry Fedora’s hire for his current squad to encounter true adversity on the football field. Despite the lingering effects of the Wake Forest loss to the fan base, it was a necessary evil in furthering coach-player bonds and forming an identity. Fedora doesn’t fear adversity. If anything, the first-year UNC head coach welcomes it. (Inside Carolina)
Lawyer: Former UNC player denied due process by university
In an effort to collect the difference between the NFL’s minimum salary and a lucrative first-round draftee’s contract, lawyers for former University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill football player Michael McAdoo argued on Thursday that his case was not handled properly by the university’s honor court. Tar Heels venture to overcome disappointment
The Tar Heels were close to perfect in week one, so they almost had to slip some against the Deacons. They nearly got away with it. Now the challenge increases. Louisville has a nice collection of athletes, and the Cardinals are ranked 19th in the Associated Press writers’ poll. “On defense, you can really see them fly around,” Fedora said. Woody Durham, A Voice Worth Hearing
Given that Durham has been named 13 times as NC Broadcaster of the Year, awarded the Lindsey Nelson Outstanding Sportscaster Award by the All-American Football Foundation and the Chris Schenkel Award from the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame, much can be learned from his experiences, which he recounts in his book. But there is one bit of advice from Durham that everyone should follow, even those with no interest in broadcasting. “If you want it bad enough, you have to work for it to get it,” he said. “And if you work hard enough, you will get it.” Durham will be doing a book signing at Two Sisters Bookery at 318 Nutt Street in Wilmington, NC, on Thursday September, 13th. Lucas: Reggie Bullock Looks To Build
Reggie Bullock has simple goals for his junior season at Carolina: “I want to be the best defensive player on the team,” he says. The stats suggest he might already be there. After winning just two defensive awards from the coaches during the nonconference portion of last year’s schedule, he won five defensive awards during ACC play, more than any other player on the roster.
