Mistakes Multiplied
One week after missing just six defensive assignments in its season opener, North Carolina quadrupled that number by committing 25 mistakes in Saturday’s loss at Wake Forest. Head coach Larry Fedora offered a simple answer regarding his defense’s performance during his weekly press conference on Monday. “Too many missed assignments; way too many missed assignments.” (Inside Carolina)
UNC QB Bryn Renner: Hard hit did not affect play against Wake Forest
North Carolina quarterback Bryn Renner said on Monday that the hard hit he endured on Saturday at Wake Forest didn’t affect his play. “I just want to clear that up for everybody,” he said, adding that any mistakes he made after that play weren’t a result of it. UNC vice chancellor Matt Kupec resigns amid questions
Matt Kupec, a former quarterback at UNC who became the university’s chief fundraiser, has resigned as vice chancellor for advancement amid questions related to his travel expenses, the university announced Monday. UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp accepted Kupec’s resignation effective immediately and the university said an internal investigation has been launched by its internal auditor. (Raleigh News & Observer)
Renner, Fedora concussion test talk causes confusion
The issue isn’t whether or not North Carolina did or didn’t do the right thing. The medical staff absolutely did by giving Renner the necessary tests before putting back on the field. It’s the reluctance to be upfront about the situation from the beginning. (WRAL Sports Fan)
Duke, North Carolina engulfed in uncertainty amid recent scandals
It’s peculiar how rivals Duke and North Carolina tripped into the NCAA crosshairs and in such a short time frame. Appropriate, too, that the two share their troubles — because they share almost everything else in common. However, it’s uncertainty, not inarguable scandal, that’s wrapped around more than just those two. In fact, every ACC basketball program in North Carolina is dealing with misfortune. (CBS Sports)
Extra Points: Limits of Control
What the Tar Heels can control are their fundamentals, their discipline, their attention to assignments and details. The coaches can be patient and continue to teach and drill the skills into players doing them for the first time in Fedora’s schemes and/or at this level of college football.
