Players Of The Week: Elon
After each win this season, the Carolina coaching staff will select players of the game who excelled in the three phases of the game. This week’s honored players were center Russell Bodine, defensive tackle Sylvester Williams and tailback/punt returner Giovani Bernard. (GoHeels.com)
For better or for worse, it’s still only one game
Anxious Tar Heels fans were more than just mildly excited about new coach Larry Fedora’s debut against Elon, a 62-0 massacre that showed off both the explosive potential of his spread offense and the playmaking possibilities of a rebuilt 4-2-5 hybrid defense. It was certainly an impressive performance. (Wilmington Star News)

5. North Carolina: Larry Fedora’s new offense couldn’t have had a better debut, as the Tar Heels rolled to a 62-0 rout of Elon. It was the most points the Tar Heels have scored since the Mack Brown era in 1995. That output overshadowed a Tar Heel defense that posted its first shutout since 1999. (ACC Sports Journal)
Number crunching with UNC’s sleek new offense
North Carolina used its new up-tempo, quick-strike offense to put a hurting on Elon in the season opener Saturday. But you knew that already. What you really want to know is quantitatively how much of an improvement is the Larry Fedora, Blake Anderson offense over the Butch Davis and Everett Withers’ offense from the past five seasons. Here’s a comparison: (Greensboro News-Record)
UNC’s barrage of punt return yardage: Putting it into perspective
UNC set an ACC record with 260 punt return yards. The old record, Clemson’s 225 yards – had stood since 1987. And you might already know that UNC’s 260 punt return yards were more than the Tar Heels’ combined punt return yardage from the past two seasons. UNC’s 260 yards in punt returns would have ranked 28th in the country last year. For the entire season. (Raleigh News & Observer)
Danny Green: Tower of Babylon
How’d you initially get into basketball? Danny Green: “I started playing organized ball when I was like 5. [North Babylon] is a small town, and in order for me to get recognition, I had to play AAU and I had to play throughout all different cities, all different boroughs. And throughout the years, playing with the city kids, I got more respect each year I’d come back, better each summer.” (SLAM Online)
UNC Football First Impressions: I Like the 4-2-5 Defense
UNCs new defensive scheme the 4-2-5 featuring hybrid positions the bandit and ram debuted in Kenan Stadium for Carolina on Saturday against Elon Phoenix. The defense played terrific football all game long shutting out the 1-AA Elon team. Personally I was pretty worried about a few things with the implementation of this new defense. The […] KIH

North Carolina Tar Heels new head coach Larry Fedora has done a great job with the 2013 recruiting class. Fedora came to Chapel Hill with a new philosophy of putting together a North Carolina Dream Team made up of the top prospects from within the great state of North Carolina. Despite NCAA sanctions that are […] KIH
Great Weekend for UNCs Mens Soccer
It’s been quite the weekend in Chapel Hill. First on almost anyone’s mind is likely to be the start of the football season (American Football that is) for UNC. Additionally, an NCAA inquest into the activities of the African American Studies Department came up rather unexpectedly clean. As if there wasn’t enough going on, Fetzer […] KIH
UNC Academic Scandal: Will We Ever Know Why?
First I want to start off by saying no, I am not a college academics or NCAA rules expert. What I do know is that only a few people have all the details on this thing. The University of North Carolina and the NCAA joint investigation into academic fraud at the University involving the athletics […] KIH
