Could Notre Dame Join the ACC?
There has been a lot of talk lately about how the ACC could be in danger of…well, let’s say exploding to its own death. Florida State has threatened to join the Big 12 as well as Clemson and Miami. Why? Football is their sport and the ACC isn’t quite there anymore. The last few seasons we’ve been drowned out and defeated pretty bad by non-ACC schools. The SEC has six straight BCS Championships.
So how do we fix this problem? Recruits! We have to find the edge in recruiting to attract players away from Alabama and LSU, and Ohio State. It’s very well possible and not out of the question.
So how else can we fix this problem? Keep Florida State, Clemson, and Miami from leaving the conference. We know they’re desperate, but if they want to be in a big football conference, we can easily fix that by keeping them from leaving the ACC. If they leave…football in the ACC is dead as we know.
Should recruiting improve (which might I add, Coach Fedora is helping out already in Chapel Hill) and we convince FSU, Clemson, and Miami to stay; there are still a wide variety of things we can do to help bring the popularity of ACC Football.
Notre Dame has stayed independent in football but has joined the ranks of the Big East in other sports. Honestly, the Big East is kind of dying and the schools that are listed as “future members” aren’t big and don’t have a lot of history in athletics. Sure Notre Dame isn’t in a coastal state, but they need a home for football and we need to revamp our football program. Is the University of Houston a team in the East? No, but they’re heading to the Big East.
So I interpret the future of the Big East as a conference trying to rebrand their identity. I say the ACC should help them out (even more). After all we began helping them landing Syracuse and Pitt!
So if we land Notre Dame, we need to steal one more Big East school that has potential more so in football, but basketball won’t hurt.
West Virginia? They have a lot of football history and have shown a lot of strength in basketball. That’d be my favorite to add along with Notre Dame.
Louisville? They have had mediocre years in football, and a few breakout years where they were strong. They definitely add to the basketball depth of the ACC, but we’re looking for football strength.
Let’s look at another conference! I know conferences like even teams, but as long as the ACC is even, I don’t see how it’s our problem!
I beleive it wouldn’t hurt to look at some FCS conferences either. There are schools that are growing each year and their programs are growing and becoming prominant in their divisions.
Take for instance Coastal Carolina University. They would fit perfectly in the ACC. I almost enrolled there, but what I learned about the school through that process was interesting. Each year the school has grown by the thousands. The school has a solid baseball team, a basketball team with potential, and should they land in a major Division I conference could see a lot of potential in the football program as well.
