It’s a great time to be a Tar Heel fan. The basketball team is ranked third in the nation and as good a bet to cut down the nets as anybody in the country. Meanwhile the football team is turning over a new leaf with new coach Larry Fedora and staff taking the reigns. With the football season behind us, and hoops season in full swing, that only means one thing. It’s recruiting season in Tar Heel land!
Whether you’re hunting for some gridiron to go nicely with your spread Fedora. Or perhaps you want a peek in at the next generation Carolina ballers. We’ve got you covered.
2012 UNC commit SF JP Tokoto needs just 21 points Friday to break the career scoring record at Menomonee Falls High School.
2012 RB Mike Hilton, a 5-foot-9, 180-pound Running Back from Sandy Creek High School, committed last summer to Ole Miss which recently changed coaches. North Carolina contacted him this week about visiting. Hilton’s comments shed some light onto the current Carolina football recruiting situation. Fedora is doing the right thing and honoring scholarship offers made by the previous coaching staff. This puts the Heels in a waiting game as they wait to see what players will do.
"“I took an official visit in October to Southern Miss, and now those coaches are at North Carolina,” “They called me and asked to visit. As of right now, North Carolina has not offered. They told me they had to go off the old coaching staff and honor the previous commitments. They are going to see what those recruits are going to do and see if any slots open up.”"
2012 LB Ken Ekanem eliminates UNC from his list of schools he is considering. Ekanem is set to visit Virginia Tech next.
More Tar Heel recruiting news after the jump
2013 UNC recruit Jabari Parker was named the 2011 USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year on Tuesday. This guy would be a huge get for Roy Williams.
"“Jabari was not only a great athlete, along with the other players on our U16 team, but also an extremely focused athlete that was coachable and wanted to improve,” U16 coach Don Showalter said in a statement. “His size and quickness were great assets that he used to his advantage. The main thing I appreciated about Jabari is that he understood the level he needed to play at every second on the court during practice and games.”"
2012 DE Alex McCalister from West Forsyth High in Clemmons, NC will announce his decision next Tuesday between Florida, Georgia Tech and UNC
Durham Hillside linebacker Jamal Marcus is scheduled to visit East Carolina this weekend and UNC on Jan. 27.
Kentucky is hot after 2013 SF Troy Williams, another UNC recruit that lists the Heels in his Top 5.
Julius Randle the #3 ranked junior toured North Carolina colleges including Carolina an Puke. Check out this out from Randle’s ESPN blog (yes a HS junior has his own ESPN blog)
"I got a chance to sit down and talk to Coach (Roy) Williams and that’s always fun. He just reiterated how much they wanted me there and he said he was gonna give me the highest praise he could give a high school player by telling me that I work as hard as Tyler Hansbrough did on the court."
