As we look ahead to the start of ACC play on January 7th against Boston College.  Let’s take a look inside the numbers at Carolinas first 15 games.  Today I’ll take a look at the Tar Heel offensive numbers through the first fifteen.  Check back later this week later this week as I go inside the numbers and look at the Tar Heels defense.

Offensively the Tar Heels have been as good as advertised, maybe even better.  UNC leads the nation in scoring at 88.1 points per contest.  Outscoring its opponents by 319 points, the Heels have sunk 99 more field goals than its foes.  Shooting just under 49%, through 15 games, UNC has quieted its preseason shooting concerns.

The emergence of Reggie Bullock and PJ Hairston as legit 3 point shooters has been a huge difference.  Bullock, a sophomore coming off a bad knee injury was a big question mark coming into the season.  He has played extremely well on both ends of the court off the bench.  He is averaging 9.3 points on 49.5% shooting and 41.4% from beyond the arc.  Bullock is developing into the shooter he was hyped to be coming in as a 5 star freshman.  Hairston is a confident shooter and shows zero hesitation jacking it up from beyond the arc.  While he has struggled with his shot the last 5 games, he has established himself as a legit threat.  PJ started off hot, put together a couple of 20+ point games, you’ve got to respect him.

Tons More Number Crunching Action After The Jump

Harrison Barnes hasn’t just been the team’s top scorer at 18.7 ppg.  He’s also been it’s top shooter, hitting on 48.7% from the field, and has the exact same shooting percentage from beyond the arc.  Barnes has taken it to the rim a lot more this season, while taking less three point shots, he’s taking them when he’s open.  And he’s shooing a nice percentage, Barnes has yet to really take over a game and dominate offensively for 2 halves.  As the games get tougher, and as the Heels need him to carry them more.  Look for Barnes to shoot the 3 a whole lot more.  That’s one of the reasons I think the Heels shooting will only get better this year.

The other, PJ Hairston.  I don’t care that he’s only shooting 37.5% from the field and has the same rate from deep.  This kid is the truth, he’s going to be the best shooter since Wayne Ellington.  In other words, he shoots the ball with such confidence for a reason, and he’s right.  PJ’s stroke is sweet, smooth and pure, the kids a shooter.  He’s having a little bit of a hard time transitioning into his role right now off the bench, his shot will come back. The offense is very, very good right now, when the shooting improves like I think it will along with the rest of the offense, this team could be very special.

It’s not like they needed much help, but the emergence of Hairston, Bullock and Barnes outside shooting has helped things inside.  The Heels sport the nations best bigs.  Led by senior Tyler Zeller and John Henson and joined by 5 star freshman James Michael McAdoo.  The bigs have shot the bell exceptionally well this year.  Zeller is shooting 52.4% from the field and still has a long way to go to catch the ACCs leader John Henson at 56%.

I can’t believe I’ve talked about the offense for this long without mentioning it’s General.  Point guard Kendall Marshall, the best point guard in the entire nation.  Averaging 10 assists per game, tops in the ACC, Marshall accounts for just over half of UNCs 19.7 assists per game.3rd in the nation.  Every time I watch Marshall play all I can think about is Jason Kidd at Cal.  Kidd was never a super fancy, around the back type of point guard, and neither is Kendall.  They are both efficient floor generals, always seen with their heads up, protecting the ball, pushing it up court, the ultimate unselfish players.  Unfortunately, Kendall and Jason share the same shooting talents also.

As a team the Heels are shooting 48.6% from the field, 23rd in the nation.  Considering that is with Hairston and fellow freshman James Michael McAdoo far from their potential, the scoring and shooting for this team has yet to blossom.  When your talking about the #1 scoring team in the country, that’s a great sign.
