Are the North Carolina Tar Heels close to flipping four-star quarterback Sam Howell? All signs are pointing to him landing in Chapel Hill.

We are just a day away from the start of the Early Signing period in College Football where players can sign their Letters of Intent to the school they choose. While it doesn’t match the level of February’s National Signing Day, it’s still an exciting day for college programs across the country including the North Carolina Tar Heels as new head coach Mack Brown gets his first taste of the early signing period.

For Brown, he’s expected to sign almost all of the current verbal commitments in the 2019 class as well as some players that are deciding between UNC and another school. One of those players happens to be four-star quarterback Sam Howell.

The Pro-Style quarterback is one of the best players at his position in the 2019 class and has been verbally committed to Florida State since April.

But the Tar Heels were able to stay on him, getting him on campus a few times since April and they appear to be close to flipping him.

Howell was reportedly on campus Sunday for a last-minute visit, his second official visit to Chapel Hill in a month. Due to the head coaching change, Howell was granted an additional visit to UNC and it could be the difference maker.

This is significant news as Howell was able to meet with Brown and new offensive coordinator Phil Longo. Florida State has yet to name a new offensive coordinator and it could doom them come Wednesday.

Howell is ranked as a Top 100 player in the class, No. 3 among Pro-Style quarterbacks and the No. 2 player in the state of North Carolina.

He recently played in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas over the weekend and would be a big in-state get for Brown and his staff.

The quarterback could come in and win the job right away as UNC hasn’t had much consistency at the position since Mitchell Trubisky left. It would be a big boost to this offense and the new air-raid passing game.
