UNC Basketball Recruiting: 2013 SF Troy Williams Which Team Will He Choose?

Five star stud recruit Troy Williams, a recruit Roy Williams has been chasing for a long time now will announce after the season.  Williams has always had the Tar Heels high on his list.  Williams is also considering, Kentucky Georgetown, Virginia Tech and Villanova.  UNC has some steep competition for Troy’s services, aside from simple fact that he’s considering some of the top schools in the country, the Heels may not have the advantage in his recruitment.  More in that in a minute, for now let’s introduce you to one of Carolinas top targets for the 2013 class.

Troy Williams is the nephew of AAU legend Boo Williams.  For much of his basketball life he’s played with a chip on his shoulder, trying to establish himself outside of being just Boo’s nephew.  Williams burst onto the national scene as a sophomore after playing a limited role his freshman season.  A great scorer who can create his own shot anywhere on the court whenever he wants.  Williams also is great at utilizing his length in the lane to finish at the basket.  Very athletic and quick down the floor, paired with his finishing skills make him perfect for North Carolinas high octane offense.  Williams is a streaky shooter who has range when his shot is on, he could stand to become a more consistent jump shooter.

Rated as the number six prospect in the 2013 class, it’s no secret why the SF is highly coveted.  Williams plans to announce his decision after the season.  The race is on, many may look at his list and assume it’s going to come down to UNC or Kentucky.  But that’s not the case, it’s time to break down the contenders. Former Boo Williams star Scottie Reynolds of Reston left Villanova in 2010 as the school’s No. 2 career scorer

Georgetown: The Hoyas have strong family connections to Troy’s family.  His aunt Terri Williams-Flournoy, coaches the Hoyas’ women’s team.   And remember Boo, the AAU legend, Troy’s uncle, both of his biggest AAU alums both went to Georgetown (Allen Iverson & Alonzo Mourning)

Kentucky: The reason the Wildcats are in this race makes me sick.  Distance from home was thought to be a big factor in Troy’s recruitment.  With Lexington about 8 hours away from his home, and considering how close the Williams family is (especially Troy and his grandmother).  Kentucky isn’t supposed to stand a chance here.  But as Boo put it, John Calipari is a very persuasive recruiter.

Villanova: A late entry and in my opinion the least favorite of the finalist to land Williams.  Another family connection keeps them in it for now.  Former Boo Williams star Scottie Reynolds is Villanovas  No. 2 career scorer

Virginia Tech: Old Boo is at it again!  Tech assistant coach John Richardson is a former assistant of Boo’s.  Williams is also a close friend of freshman forward Dorian Finney-Smith of Portsmouth.  Then the obvious fact that VT is the only school in VA, Williams home state.

North Carolina: The only connect Carolina has is that Troy’s former AAU teammate James Michael McAdoo plays for the Heels.  Given that VT isn’t a powerhouse and Kentucky is further away, the Heels have a shot.  Roy Williams is one of the best recruiters in the country and UNC is in the top 5 for a reason.
