The UNC football program is facing an off-the-field issue, as Tomari Fox’s eligibility for the 2022 season may be in question.

If you watched the Duke’s Mayo Bowl on Thursday afternoon, you may have noticed that Tomari Fox was nowhere to be found.

No, he is not injured, but was not allowed to participate in any of the UNC football program’s bowl week activities or play in the actual game.

Why?

According to a North Carolina spokesman, Fox was ruled out from the final week of the season after he was found using a pre-workout supplement that was not approved by the NCAA. The junior defensive lineman thought the supplement was approved, but it was determined that it was not.

Not only has this impacted Fox’s status for the Tar Heels bowl game, but it could even alter his eligibility for the 2022 season.

As of now, the decision regarding Fox’s case is under appeal. If his appeal is granted, Fox will maintain his eligibility and will be able to move forward. If the appeal is denied, the Lawrenceville, Georgia native will be ruled ineligible for the 2022 season, but there is a chance he still could be eligible for postseason play.

Fox has become a steady contributor for the Tar Heels defense over the last three seasons. During the 2021 season, Fox played in the team’s first 12 games, recording 24 tackles and a sack.

Even though the UNC football program has ample defensive lineman depth heading into the 2022 season, losing Fox would still be a major blow. Regardless of the team’s depth chart, they are hopeful that Fox wins his appeal and is eligible to play next season.

During the appeal period, Fox will be able to participate in team activities, including practices. There is no set timetable on a decision, so we’ll have to wait and see how this all plays out.
