February 20, 2019: UNC 88, Duke 72

The first meeting between the Tar Heels and Blue Devils in 2019 was a big one in more than one way. A star-studded crowd packed into Cameron Indoor Stadium including Spike Lee, Ken Griffey Jr., and Barack Obama to No. 3 North Carolina battle No. 1 Duke.

The Blue Devils entered the game led by freshmen R.J. Barrett, Zion Williamson,  Cam Reddish, and Tre Jones while UNC had a mixture of freshmen and upper classmen with Coby White, Nassir Little, Luke Maye and Cameron Johnson leading the way.

But the game took a big turn early on as Williamson blew out of his shoe and injured his knee.

Williamson didn’t return and Maye and the Tar Heels took full advantage. Maye finished the game with 30 points and 15 rebounds in the blowout win. Duke never seemed to get it together once Williamson left despite having two other lottery picks in the starting lineup.

The Tar Heels controlled the pace of the game and took the lead early, never looking back and winning in dominant fashion. Johnson added 26 points while Garrison Brooks had 14 and the win pulled UNC into a tie in first place in the ACC with the Blue Devils.
