The UNC Women’s Basketball program is off to a hot start this season, improving to 4-0 after another win on Friday night
The North Carolina Tar Heels’ men’s basketball program aren’t the only team off to a hot start for the 2019-20 college basketball season. With a 4-0 record, the women’s basketball team is also off to a great start this season.
The Women’s team improved their record to 4-0 with a 76-46 win over Elon on Friday. The win comes just a few days after the men beat Elon to improve to 4-0 on the year.
With the win, UNC is off to a hot start in head coach Courtney Banghart’s first season. She took over for Sylvia Hatchell who resigned in April. While there was a drop-off expected during Banghart’s first year, it’s been so far, so good.
The Tar Heels have won every game by 30 or more points, racking up wins over Western Carolina, Navy, Charleston Southern and most recently Elon.
UNC had four players score in double-figures in the win over Elon, led by forward Malu Tshitenge who scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to record her second double-double on the early season. Taylor Koenen and Madinah Muhammad added 14 points while Janelle Baily finished with 12.
Holding a 36-21 lead at halftime, UNC opened the second half with a 16-6 run to essentially put the game away. They put the clamps down defensively on Elon, forcing 18 turnovers in which they turned into 20 points.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a trip to Cancun to play in the Cancun Challenge. They will open up the tournament taking on Temple on Thursday as the Owls are 2-2 on the year. UNC will then play Missouri on Friday night.
