UNC Basketball: Cameron Johnson earns ACC honor

Senior Cameron Johnson was honored by the Atlantic Coast Conference for his play last week against Gonzaga

The North Carolina Tar Heels were only in action once last week as they continue through their non-conference schedule but they really made the most of a big opportunity.

UNC was able to take care of No. 4 Gonzaga 103-90 on Saturday night in the Dean Dome, earning a big non-conference win as we approach Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Tar Heels still have another tough game against Kentucky on a neutral floor in Chicago but as of now, things are trending up.

In that Gonzaga game, UNC got a big lift from senior forward Cam Johnson who scored a game-high 25 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Johnson caught fire in the first half and really got going, helping UNC open up a double-digit lead at halftime.

For Johnson’s efforts, he was recognized by the ACC on Monday as they announced their weekly awards.

The ACC named Johnson their Player of the Week for last week, despite him playing in just the one game for UNC. His efforts against Gonzaga were enough for the conference to recognize just how good his really was.

Johnson’s award is the first Player of the Week honor for a UNC player this season as Coby White won Freshman of the Week a few weeks back.

On the season, Johnson is averaging a team-high 16.6 points and has been really good shooting the basketball. He’s shooting 53.2 percent from the field and is making just over 87 percent of his free throw attempts.

Johnson is also averaging 5.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game as the Tar Heels enter Saturday’s showdown with the Wildcats as the No. 9 ranked team at 8-2 overall.
