2005 Illinois Fighting Illini

Illinois had an impressive season in 2005. They lost one regular season game and entered the national championship against UNC with an impressive 37-1 record. Illinois lost to North Carolina 75-70 in the title game. They were led by Deron Williams, Luther Head and Dee Brown.

North Carolina’s Sean May dominated the national championship by scoring 26 points (10-11 from the field) and grabbing 10 rebounds. Head led Illinois with 21 points, five rebounds and three assists. Williams had 17 points, seven assists, four rebounds and three steals. Brown had 12 points, seven assists, four rebounds and one steal.

Illinois won the Big Ten regular season championship and the Big 10 Tournament. In 2014, Sports Illustrated voted this team as the overall best team ever to not win a title.
