Is highly-recruited five-star prospect and UNC Basketball target Chet Holmgren ready to make his commitment?

Chet Holmgren is one of the top-ranked prospects in the Class of 2021. According to 247 Sports, the risking senior from Minneapolis, MN ranks as the No. 2 overall recruit in his class. He’s one of the top targets left on the UNC Basketball recruiting board and would be a huge get for the program.

A few weeks ago, Holmgren announced his Top 7 list, which luckily included the Tar Heels. The addition of Holmgren would be a huge get for Roy Williams and his staff, as they would bring in a versatile big man who could make an impact right away.

Although adding Holmgren would be nice, the recent speculation points to the five-star recruit heading elsewhere. However, is the highly-recruited prospect ready to make a decision?

At this point, it doesn’t appear that way.

In a recent “question and answer” post, Rivals Basketball Recruiting Analyst Corey Evans was asked who is the favorite to land Holmgren. Evans gave his answer on the matter, but also believes it may be some time before a final decision is ultimately made:

"You’d have to say Gonzaga. It doesn’t feel that Chet Holmgren is anywhere near his commitment and he has he been adamant about taking all of his visits before deciding.Holmgren has already visited the WCC program, his good friend and former teammate, Jalen Suggs, will be a freshman in Spokane this fall, and Gonzaga is a program that has done tremendous work with those in his mold in recent years. If not Gonzaga, Minnesota is worth monitoring as the local program. His father played for the Gophers, and his mother worked at the school. North Carolina Michigan, Ohio State, Georgetown and Memphis are on his list but before visits can be taken and with how things currently sit, it would be foolish to not say that Gonzaga is one of, if not, the school to beat."

To coincide with his Crystal Ball prediction from a few weeks back, Evans still believes that Gonzaga is the school to beat in this recruiting race. Although the Zags may have an upper edge at this point, it appears that Holmgren is still focused on taking all of his campus visits prior to officially committing.

If Holmgren’s recruiting process drags out, it could end up benefitting the Tar Heels. As he looks to make his official visits, the Tar Heels may be able to alter his decision once he arrives on campus. The current COVID-19 situation may impact his recruiting process, but hopefully he’s able to make an official trip to Chapel Hill before he chooses where he wants to play his collegiate career.

Unfortunately, if you’re waiting for his decision, you’ll have to wait even more. As of now, it doesn’t look like a decision from the No. 1 rated player in Minnesota is coming anytime soon.
