Former UNC Basketball players and head coach Roy Williams deliver a powerful statement on Monday night in a video released on Twitter

Over the past two months, the United States of America has seen large, powerful protests in major cities all around after the tragic deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and Breonna Taylor in 2020.

Many have spoken out on these issues as athletes, coaches and celebrities have used their platforms to speak on racial injustice in this country. That includes college coaches who are hoping to create a better and more welcoming environment for everyone on campus. Now, the North Carolina Tar Heels are the latest to do so.

On Monday night, the University of North Carolina basketball program released a video that runs just over 2 minutes titled “Say it with us  Black Lives Matter” and it starts with head coach Roy Williams telling the story of Dean Smith changing college basketball by signing Charlie Scott, the first African American to a scholarship at the University of North Carolina.

Throughout the video, Williams is joined by former players such as Michael Jordan Sean May, Tyler Hansbrough, Danny Green, James Worthy, Justin Jackson, Luke Maye, and Ty Lawson amongst others who have won a national championship with the program as they deliver a powerful message:

Many UNC players have also helped march in protests across the country over the past month or so as well as made donations.

Just a few weeks ago, UNC’s rival Duke released a similar video headlined by head coach Mike Krzyzewski as he delivered a similar powerful message about what is going on in our country right now. Both programs have now released powerful statements in a time where they are needed the most.
