Three UNC football recruits make the cut in the latest Rivals100 Prospect Ranking for 2020

Things are trending up for Mack Brown and the North Carolina football program after a seven-win season, and a victory in the 2020 Military Bowl. The Tar Heels won more games in 2019 than they did in the previous two seasons combined, made their first bowl game appearance since 2016 and won a postseason game for the first time in seven years. And even with all of that in consideration, better days may still be ahead.

Three future UNC football players — Joshua Downs, Desmond Evans and Kedrick Bingley-Jones — made the cut in the latest Rivals100 Prospect Ranking for 2020. And while three recruits in the top-100 might not be a big deal for the North Carolina basketball team, it is for the football program that saw just five wins in two seasons, and went through a coaching change immediately following the 2018 season.

Downs, a 5-foot-9, 160-pound wide receiver out of Suwanee, Georgia, is ranked 53rd in the nation according to Rivals. Before committing to North Carolina, Downs had nearly 30 scholarship offers from some of the biggest names in college football, including Arkansas, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State and Tennessee. He joins a UNC receiving corps that already boasts one of the top tandems in the Atlantic Coast Conference in Dazz Newsome and Dyami Brown.

Desmond Evans is a highly touted weak side defensive end out of Lee County High School in Sanford, North Carolina that picked the Tar Heels over Alabama, Clemson, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State, Penn State, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas A&M, among others. A 6-foot-6, 240-pound lineman with tons of upside, Evans is ranked No. 76 in the nation, and second in the state of North Carolina. His size and athleticism should help him make an immediate impact on the UNC defensive front line.

Bingley-Jones is a 6-foot-4, 275-pound strong side defensive end from Providence Day High School. A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Bingley-Jones committed to North Carolina in August of 2019, and chose the Tar Heels over Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia Tech, among a host of others. He’s ranked 98th overall, fifth at his position and third in the state of North Carolina. Similar to Evans, Bingley-Jones’ combination of size, strength and athleticism should add instant depth and talent to the North Carolina defense.
