UNC Football freshman Sam Howell picks up some more recognition on Monday as the 2019 college football season comes to a close

The awards and recognition just keep pouring in for North Carolina freshman quarterback Sam Howell after his impressive first season in Chapel Hill.

Howell set a few freshman and program records in 2019 for the Tar Heels, being named the starter right out of the gate. After flipping his commitment from Florida State to North Carolina, Tar Heels’ fans are happy they indeed did land him.

On Monday, as we get set for the final college football game of the 2019 season, Howell was recognized once again as one of the best freshman players of the country. The quarterback was named to the Football Writers Association of America-Shaun Alexander Freshman All-America Team:

Howell threw for 3,641 passing yards, 38 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions this season as he started in all 13 games for the Tar Heels. He broke Trevor Lawrence’s record for most touchdown passes by a freshman in a single season by 8 and set a new UNC program mark as well.

His 38 touchdowns rank fourth in all of college football behind only Joe Burrow, Anthony Gordon and Justin Fields.

Howell also finished his first season in Chapel Hill as a member of the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Team, landing on the Third Team and being named the Freshman of the Year in the conference.
