Class of 2020 UNC basketball commit continues to improve and impress on the grassroots circuit

The North Carolina basketball program got off to a quick start with the class of 2020, securing a commitment from Day’Ron Sharpe the summer before his junior year of high school.

Merely a 4-star prospect at the time of his verbal pledge to the Tar Heels, the 6-foot-10, 246-pound Sharpe was tabbed the No. 72 recruit in the nation the week after his commitment. In the time since, he’s added a fifth star to his ranking, and moved up 50 spots in the 247Sports Composite.

Evidenced by his quick rise to 5-star status, Sharpe was both underrated and under-recruited when Roy Williams and the Tar Heels nabbed him just over 13 months ago. Upon his commitment to North Carolina, Sharpe’s exposure quickly increased, and so did the fanfare surrounding his recruitment. Now, there’s rarely a tournament that Sharpe is in, or a gymnasium that he walks into that he isn’t one of the main attractions.

Rivals recruiting analyst Eric Bossi recently named Sharpe the top overall performer — a.k.a. “the dude” — at the Adidas Gauntler Finale, noting both his physical growth, and progression as a basketball player over the past season-plus.

"“Sharpe has always been a dude. In SoCal, he was THE dude,” Bossi writes. “We write and talk about men among boys in sports, but Sharpe really fit that description. It feels like each time I see him he’s a little stronger, a little more skilled and a little more mean. Sharpe has the best hands of any big in the class and he just keeps getting better.”"

Sharpe will be a huge addition to a 2020-21 UNC front court that could potentially boast a senior Garrison Brooks and a sophomore Armando Bacot as the team’s starting big men. The Tar Heels also have scholarship offers out to five other bigs in the 2020 class, including 5-star prospects Walker Kessler, Greg Brown and Isaiah Todd.

Sharpe is currently the No. 22 prospect in the nation, ranked fifth among centers in the class, and No. 2 in the state of North Carolina.
