Former Michigan commit and top-50 prospect Jalen Wilson finalizing plans to visit UNC basketball program

The North Carolina men’s basketball program has a shot at one final commitment from a 2019 prospect, and he’s currently finalizing plans for an official visit to the school before making a decision early this summer.

According to his mother, Lisa, former Michigan commit and 4-star recruit Jalen Wilson is scheduling a trip to Chapel Hill from June 3-5, per a report from Inside Carolina on Tuesday. He’ll be just two days removed from an official visit to the University of Kansas in Lawrence, which is set for May 30-June 1.

Upon reopening his recruitment last week, Wilson also named Florida and Oklahoma State as potential landing spots this fall, but the Tar Heels and Jayhawks are widely considered the overwhelming favorites to receive his commitment.

His decommitment and renewed search for a college is due to the unexpected coaching change in Ann Arbor that saw longtime Wolverines head coach John Beilein leave for the same position with the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers. After the news broke, Wilson quickly asked for a release from his letter of intent; a request that was granted just a few days later. He’ll now be able to choose a new school, while remaining eligible to play immediately.

The Jayhawks may have a leg up on the Tar Heels, though, thanks to Wilson’s friend R.J. Hampton, who appears to be leaning toward Kansas. Bill Self’s team has both the open scholarships, and the minutes to offer the pair of top-50 prospects. Without some serious reshuffling, Roy Williams and company can offer just one additional player a scholarship in 2019 — and even that will require the Tar Heels to revoke a scholarship from a player currently receiving one.

Wilson is ranked No. 50 in the class of 2019 according to the 247Sports Composite, and 44th in the Top247. He’s the No. 13 player at his position, and top-10 in the state of Texas.
