5-star power forward planning official visits, considering options

As 2018 comes to a close and spring’s late signing period quickly approaches, five-star power forward Matthew Hurt remains one of the top uncommitted prospects in the class of 2019.

North Carolina head coach Roy Williams was in Minnesota on Tuesday night to watch the talented big man play. The visit came just days ahead of Hurt’s official visit to Chapel Hill that’s scheduled for this weekend. The 6-foot-9, 215-pound prospect recently took an official visit to Kentucky, and has trips to Duke and Kansas planned for the months of January and February, respectively.

After those four visits, Hurt will have one remaining official visit at his disposal. There’s speculation that his final visit, if scheduled, could go to either Memphis, Minnesota or Villanova. Of course, he would be allowed to take any number of unofficial visits if needed.

Hurt’s brother, Michael, is a junior reserve for the Golden Gophers, and that relationship has played a big part in his recruitment to this point. Minnesota head coach Richard Pitino has been heavily involved with Hurt from the very beginning, and he’s put as much or more time into his recruitment as anyone.

No. 7 in the 247Sports Composite, Hurt has long been considered a strong Kansas lean. In recent weeks, though, Kentucky coach John Calipari appears to have turned up the heat in his pursuit of the versatile post player out of Rochester, Minnesota.

North Carolina is said to still be a player in the race, too, and the Tar Heels will make their best pitch when Hurt comes to town this weekend. He’ll be in attendance when the Tar Heels host the Gonzaga Bulldogs Saturday night in what should be one of the best environments in college basketball this season.

Current projections on 247Sports favor Kansas to land Hurt in a landslide over second-place Minnesota.
