The Tar Heels could be the favorites to flip a former Duke commit and add to their 2019 recruiting class

The North Carolina Tar Heels have managed to flip a former Duke football commit in the past as they landed quarterback Chazz Surratt just a few years back. Now, they may have their eyes on another former Blue Devils commit who is one of the better players in the state of North Carolina.

Four-star defensive back Tony Davis announced Monday that he is reopening his recruitment after no longer being committed to Duke.

Davis committed to the Blue Devils back in December but has since drawn interest and offers from other programs across the country. That includes the Tar Heels who offered the in-state recruit back in March.

Other schools that have offered Davis include Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, Virginia Tech, Michigan and N.C. State.  With his recruitment open, those schools are pushing hard to get a visit from Davis and hope to land the talented player who is ranked No. 31 among all cornerbacks in the 2019 class.

The Tar Heels could be one of the favorites to flip Davis from Duke as he was on campus for the annual Freak Show event just weeks ago. Davis was one of the better players to attend the Freak Show and performed well in front of several UNC coaches.

It’s only been hours since Davis announced his decision but the Tar Heels can be seen as a favorite to land Davis. He was on campus for the annual Cook Out event last weekend and was able to connect with some UNC coaches and players during the event.

If they do flip him from the Blue Devils, it would help the Tar Heels in-state recruiting struggles as they only have one Top 50 player from the state of North Carolina committed to their 2019 class.

Davis is in no rush to make his decision and will likely wait a few weeks to do so. Expect him to take some visits to schools interested, including Chapel Hill.
