Roy Williams was in California watching one of the top players in the 2019 recruiting class

The second evaluation period of July is officially underway as college coaches are able to attend events and watch basketball recruits play. Last week we told you about University of North Carolina head coach watching prospects at the Nike Peach Jam and adidas Gauntlet.

Williams continues to show significant interest in several 2019 and 2020 recruits as he hopes to add to both classes which have a recruit verbally committed already.

One of Williams’ top targets in the 2019 class is Minnesota native Matthew Hurt.

The five-star power forward is ranked as the No. 6 overall recruit in the 2019 class and the No. 3 power forward. Williams and the Tar Heels showed interest in Hurt early on in his recruitment, joining programs like Kansas and Minnesota expressing their interest for him.

As time went on, more and more teams showed interest in Hurt including UCLA, Duke, Arizona and Louisville. Hurt has a total of 18 offers as he heads into his senior year at John Marshall Senior.

This weekend Hurt is playing in the adidas Summer Championship in California going up against some of the top talent in high school.

Pool play began earlier in the week and Williams was there on both Wednesday and Thursday night to watch Hurt according to Rivals reporter Corey Evans. He was joined by Penny Hardaway (Memphis), Coach K (Duke) and Archie Miller (Indiana).  Assistants from Minnesota, Kansas, Kentucky and Ohio State were also in attendance.

The Blue Blood programs are now in on Hurt but despite that, Evans says that it’s still up in the air where Hurt lands and at one time UNC and Kansas were considered the favorites.

Williams being in California to watch Hurt is big and could pay dividends for the Tar Heels in the future. With Jeremiah Francis already signed to the class as a point guard, Williams would love to add a talented wing like Hurt to the mix.

There’s no word on when Hurt will take his official visits and where he will take them but check back with Keeping It Heel for more updates on the five-star recruit.
