Will the North Carolina Tar Heels land their biggest commitment in the 2018 football recruiting class?

Tuesday could be one of the biggest days in the history of UNC’s football program and it all revolves around a prized recruit.

Five star running back Zamir White will officially make his decision on Tuesday, June 27th announcing what school he will attend next year. The announcement will come on his mother’s birthday, marking a significant day in his life.

But where do the Tar Heels stand in the race for White?

UNC made the cut for White’s top schools along with Clemson, Alabama and Georgia.

The Laurinburg, North Carolina product is just miles away from campus but will he stay in-state?

White has made a two recent trips to UNC in the last few weeks. He visited the Tar Heels on June 11 and then once again on June 17. He participated in Fedora’s Freak Show, a big recruiting event held at UNC.

While UNC doesn’t really stack up to to prominence of Alabama,  Georgia and Clemson, they have a legit shot in landing White.

A couple of factors play into this.

Laurinburg is just under two hours away from Chapel Hill. This will give White’s friends and family the chance to come to every one of his games in Chapel Hill. Obviously, the family would travel to see White wherever he decides to go but Chapel Hill being close is a huge factor.

Then there’s the chance to play with one of his best friends.

UNC linebacker Jonathan Smith is best friends with White and as close as brothers. The two attended the same high school and have been very close to eachother.

Playing with his best friend could be one of the more bigger factors in his decision.

Many believe Georgia is the overwhelming favorites to land White and he could be the big piece in the Bulldogs 2018 class. Although it appears to be a two-horse race between the Bulldogs and Tar Heels, the 247 Sports Crystal Ball has Georgia at 92 percent to land White just a little under 24 hours until he makes his decision.

The other 8 percent belongs to Clemson.

However just before White’s visit to Chapel Hill for the Freak Show, his high school coach hinted that the Tar Heels have picked up some momentum.

If UNC does somehow manage to land White, it will be their first five-star recruit since 2009 when defensive end Donte Paige-Moss signed with the Tar Heels. It will also be the biggest running back commit to UNC since Elijah Hood committed in 2013.

A commitment would certainly improve UNC’s class and shoot it up the rankings for 2018. With just under a week until four-star wide receiver Jordyn Adams makes his decision, UNC could land two of the best in-state players at their position in a matter of a 7-day span.

It could be just what UNC needs to take that next step under Larry Fedora.
