Former Tar Heel golfer Mark Wilson to play in U.S. Open

The 114th U.S. Open began this morning at 6:45 a.m. down at Pinehurst No. 2, and the Tar Heels have a former letterman in the tournament to represent the host state of the tournament. UNC alumnus Mark Wilson will tee off the 10th tee at 12:52 p.m. this afternoon. Wilson played golf at UNC from 1994-1997.

Mark Wilson has been a regular on tour since 2003 and has won five tournaments since 2007. His best year was in 2011, when he won two tournaments, had four top-ten finishes and eclipsed 3 million dollars in prize money. Wilson has played at the U.S. Open three times before, but has missed the cut each of the previous three times.

Wilson will be teeing off this Thursday with former Duke golfer Joe Ogilvie. Ogilvie has one career win in 2007 on the PGA Tour.

The 114th U.S. Open will be played this weekend down in Pinehurst, which is just a short drive down 15-1501 from Chapel Hill. Although there may only be one Tar Heel golfer, I’m sure there will be a lot of the Tar Heel faithful among the gallery this weekend. Keep an eye out for Mark Wilson on the leaderboard and cheer on the former Tar Heel!
