North Carolina shortstop Michael Russell was named an All-American by Baseball America this afternoon. Russell was the third team’s shortstop behind first teamer Trea Turner of N.C. State and second teamer Blake Trahan of Louisiana-Lafayette.
Russell was also the only Tar Heel to be knighted with All-American honors by Baseball America. Last year, North Carolina third baseman Colin Moran was named to the first team as DH.
Russell hit a team-hight .339 in 60 games this season for the Tar Heels. He had 32 RBIs and four home runs as well in his strong junior campaign. Russell was drafted in the 5th round (157th overall) of the most recent MLB Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays.
Russell was also named third team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association on Wednesday.
Oregon State, Indiana and Louisiana-Lafayette lead all teams with three All-Americans apiece. There were five players from the ACC selected: Two from N.C. State and one apiece for the Tar Heels, Virginia and Florida State.
Kentucky junior A.J. Reed was named BA’s Player of the Year after starring both on the mound and at the plate for the Wildcats.
