Know your NCAA Baseball Regional Enemy: College of Charleston

The North Carolina Tar Heels received an at-large NCAA bid to the Gainesville Regional on Monday afternoon. They will play second seeded Long Beach State in their first game in the NCAA Baseball Regional on the Road To Omaha. Long Beach State and Carolina make up two of the four teams in the regional; the remaining two are host Florida and fourth seeded College of Charleston. Today, we will take a look at College of Charleston and learn some more about the Cougars.

Team Name: College of Charleston Cougars
Seed: Fourth in Gainesville Regional
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Distance from the Regional: around 300 miles

Overall: 41-17
Conference: 15-6
Best series wins: Home against UNC from 2-15/2-17, 3-0 in CAA Tournament to receive auto-bid.

Top Three Hitters
Gunnar Heidt: .335(batting average)/.417(on-base percentage)/.482(slugging percentage), four homers, 30 RBIs
Carl Wise: .293/.402/.423, three homer, 52 RBIs
Blake Butler: .288/.379/.386, three homers, 24 RBIs

Top Two Starters
Bailey Ober: 1.37 ERA, 9-2 W-L record, 91.2 innings pitched, 12 starts
Taylor Clarke: 2.65 ERA, 10-3 W-L record, 91.2 innings pitched, 15 starts

Eric Bower: 2.06 ERA, 5-2 W-L record, 48.0 innings pitched, 12 appearances
Henry Chase: 2.31 ERA, 2-0 W-L record, 46.2 innings pitched, 27 appearances
Michael Hanzlik: 3.53 ERA, 14 saves, 35.2 innings pitched, 29 appearances

Led by starter Bailey Ober and hitter Gunnar Heidt, fourth-seeded Charleston is widely regarded as one of the top four seeds in the tournament. They had a good record in their conference, the CAA, and won their conference tournament to receive an automatic bid. The Cougars also took two out of three from the Diamond Heels back in mid-February, in three games that surely seem like they happened eons ago for the team.

This team is a tough one, and while they aren’t good enough to advance out of the regional, they are surely good enough to win a game or two down in Gainesville.
