The North Carolina Tar Heels knew that this game was a must win for their NCAA tournament chances, and they delivered, winning 13-7 against the Maryland Terrapins in the ACC Tournament on Saturday night. UNC scored six runs in the bottom of the eight inning to put away the Terps. The win was UNC’s 34th of the season, and they now await to see if they will land an NCAA postseason appearance for the 13th straight year.
The Diamond Heels built up a 7-2 in the fifth behind a four run inning. Maryland wouldn’t go down without a fight, scoring five in the seventh inning. But the Tar Heels countered again, this time with the knock out blow in the 8th inning. The Heels scored six runs in that inning and Reilly Hovis closed the door in the ninth.
Outfielder Skye Bolt finished 3 for 5 with two RBIs and Michael Russell went 2 for 3 as the hot hitters of the day for Carolina. UNC finished with 13 runs on 15 hits, while leaving just seven runners on base. The Heels pitching, led by starter Zac Gallen, held Maryland to seven runs on two less hits than the Tar Heels.
UNC, however, will not repeat as ACC Champions, as Georgia Tech and Maryland will face off at 1:00 PM tomorrow to decide the ACC title winner.
