Skye Bolt was up with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and Wood Myers was waiting anxiously on second base. You couldn’t think of a better hitter on the Tar Heels roster in that situation to hopefully drive in the winning run than Bolt. But Bolt didn’t come through for the Tar Heels and after a fly out to right field, the Diamond Heel’s chances of repeating as ACC championships were put to rest.
Virginia defeated UNC 3-2 in the ACC Tournament on Friday night, dropping the Tar Heels to 0-2 in ACC Tournament pool play. Virginia struck first in the fourth inning, going up 1-0. They added a second run in the seventh inning on a safety squeeze.
Carolina needed a big hit to get back in the ballgame, and they got it from freshman Wood Myers of Jordan High School. Myers hit a two run homer in the seventh inning to tie the game at two. But it didn’t take long for UVA to reclaim the lead in the 8th, going up 3-2, and they held on until the end to secure the victory.
Carolina starter Benton Moss pitched his heart out, going 6.2 innings and giving up just four hits while recording eight strikeouts. Wood Myers was the hot hitter for the Tar Heels, going 4-5, including the big two run homer to tie the game. The Heels would finish with nine hits on the night but left 11 on base.
UNC finishes ACC pool play tomorrow against Maryland at 3 p.m.
