Lady Tar Heels Advance to Elite 8

The UNC Women’s Basketball team advanced to the Elite 8 in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday night with a win over the first seeded South Carolina Gamecocks. The 4th seeded Tar Heels advanced to the Elite 8 behind strong play from standout freshman Diamond DeShields, who had 19 points in a winning effort. The Tar Heels advanced to the Elite 8 for the first time since 2008.

UNC led in the game from the start to the finish despite being seeded three spots lower than the Gamecocks. Leading the Tar Heels in points was DeShields and Stephanie Mavunga, who had 13 points. Off the bench, Danielle Butts had eight key points as well for the Lady Tar Heels.

For South Carolina, Center Alaina Coates dominated off the bench with 22 points. As a team, USC shot just 37.1% from the field and 33.3% from three point land. That poor shooting effort and the inability to keep UNC off the glass meant that South Carolina’s season ended in disappointment Sunday night.

North Carolina will play Stanford in the Elite 8 for the right to play in the Final Four in Nashville, Tennessee. The game will be played on Stanford’s home floor, so the Lady Tar Heels will basically have to prepare for a hostile road environment.
