According to an interview with David Laton – Chris Paul’s high school coach - USA Today’s Jason Jordan learned that former UNC basketball coach Matt Doherty actually wanted Chris Paul to walk-on at the University of North Carolina.
He [Chris Paul] actually grew up a North Carolina fan. That was his favorite basketball team growing up, but Matt Doherty was there at the time. Doherty told us, and I’m not saying it wasn’t true, but he told us that they didn’t have any more scholarships. When we visited the school he was trying to get Chris to pay his own way for a year. I knew that wasn’t gonna happen.
Paul ended up staying right at home and played for Wake Forest who did have a scholarship for him. As one of the best point guards in the NBA today, to think that Doherty could have had his chance to let him play for UNC and let it slip away has to be leave a sour taste in many mouths including his own.
Paul has a career average 18.6 points per game, 11.2 assists per game, and 4.4 rebounds per game in the NBA. In two seasons at Wake Forest, he averaged 15.1 points per game, 6.3 assists per game, and 3.9 rebounds per game.
