Sylvia Hatchell’s 2013-14 season started off with an unexpected twist when she received the news from doctors that she was diagnosed with cancer in October, just weeks before the Lady Tar Heels were scheduled to begin their season.
September was quite a busy month for Hatchell, who only spent three days at home that month. She was busy on the road recruiting, meeting obligations, and accepting her nomination into the Naismith Hall of Fame. She was showing fatigue, as she should with a schedule like that, but it just didn’t seem right. It prompted Hatchell to seek medical attention. She was given steroids to help her through September, but in October she went for a bone marrow biopsy.
After an afternoon practice, Hatchell received a call and was informed she should return to the UNC Cancer Center on Saturday where she would not leave the center for sometime after arriving.
Despite all of the downs and obstacles, Hatchell has remained focus on defeating cancer and returning to the bench for her Lady Tar Heels before the season is over. Before many UNC home football and basketball games, videos featuring Hatchell would air as she showed her support for her school.
On January 3rd, she received great news. She was now cancer free! Despite winning her battle, Hatchell has several treatments remaining to ensure that the cancer does not return. While she completes her treatment, she is working hard to recover and return to her bench.
So now that she is well, it’s no longer Get Well Coach. But rather, it’s Welcome Back Coach! We look forward to seeing you on the sidelines again very soon!
