Former North Carolina Tar Heel PJ Hairston is on his way to the NBA…well, working his way towards the NBA that is and is making progress towards his goal of playing in the NBA. According to Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports, the Texas Legends plan to claim Hairston off of waivers.
The Legends are the the D-League affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks based in Frisco, Texas. The Legends are currently ranked fourth in the D-League Central Division and hold a record of 12-8 overall.
As for Hairston, he seems to be following in the footsteps of Glen Rice Jr (Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets) who was dismissed from the program, claimed by a team to play in the D-League and entered the NBA Draft the following draft. The next best option for Hairston would be to play overseas and return for the NBA Draft later this year.
Hairston was sure to be a lottery pick last year, but opted to return to North Carolina. Unfortunately, he never would return to the court in a Carolina uniform and would be dismissed after a summer of trouble that put his NCAA eligibility in jeopardy. After an investigation of their own, UNC determined that they would not seek reinstatement with the NCAA for Hairston days after Leslie McDonald was reinstated.
