The Countdown to Bowlmas will be a running series on Keeping It Heel leading up to the Belk Bowl on December 28th. The series will recap moments from the season in UNC football from Marquise Williams’s rise to Ryan Switzer’s amazing returns. We will even roll with the Christmas theme and center our recaps around verses from the song “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” Check back every morning for the daily countdown post, and use #Bowlmas to support the movement on Twitter.

Put down your eggnog, you know those cookies are Santa’s
Gather ‘round the fire in your footed pajamas
We’re starting a new tradition here at Keeping It Heel,
Something sure to give you that cheesy, warm Christmas feel
12 days of bowl-mas leading up to Belk Bowl
Where the game between UNC and UC will surely unfold
If you ask me, I think victory’ll be ours
But let’s take a look at how we all got this far
So settle in, bring your hot cocoa with tiny marshmellows
Let me tell you a story about Ryan Switzer, he’s a fast little fellow
The story unfolded at Heinz Field on November 16
In front of Pitt and Steeler fans alike no doubt, it was a beautiful thing
Pitt kicked a field goal to put points on the board
Then our QB Marquise Williams answered with a TD run of his own
Another UNC field goal, another Williams TD scamper
Pitt fans were weeping into Terrible Towels, enough so to put in the hamper
So that made the score a comfortable 17-3
When Ryan Switzer decided to light up the Christmas tree—speaking figuratively
They say freshman gain their fifteen pounds
But on Switzer, that’s no more true than a killer whale will drown
Because when caught the punt and zig-zagged like a maniac
He found pay-dirt in the Endzone, leaving Pitt fans reeling from heart attacks
That left the score going into half at 24-3,
But the onslaught didn’t stop there you see
Another Thomas Moore field goal, our score now sits at 27
Larry Fedora happier than winning a big-gulp slushee at 7-11
The Panthers weren’t done though, they came storming back
It was terrible to watch them score in succession, like that
First two touchdowns, then a field goal
Then tack on another Pitt TD—oh, no…here we go
How did the game get tied? Oh what will we do?
If only there was somebody to save us, but who, oh who?
That’s when they punted to Switzer who caught it
Looking down crashing defenders, UNC hoping for magic
Then we all screamed at our TV’s things in happy elation
As Switzer burned the defenders like overcooked bacon
Chapel Hill left Pennsylvania with a victory, they were feeling so good
Thanks to Ryan Switzer, the freshman little engine that could
