UNC Basketball: How To Keep The Momentum Going

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde aka the North Carolina Tar Heels are alive and well. Just three days removed from being battered and beaten by UAB, The Heels went into East Lansing and laid the smack down on the #1 team in the country, Michigan State. Now Carolina must build off this victory and find away to keep the momentum going. Here’s a few things they need to accomplish to do just that.

Take care of UNC Greensboro: As well know UNC has had it troubles with the “little guy”. So Carolina needs to get of to a fast start and not allow Greensboro to stick around and gain confidence. If they hit this team in the mouth early, a pretty comfortable victory should be the result.

More touches for Johnson and Meeks: Bottom line, these boys produce. Rising sophomore forward  Brice Johnson is averaging 13.6 points and 7.0 rebounds in just 20.1 minutes per game. He’s shooting 62.5 percent from the floor as well as 68.2 percent from the free throw line, which is above average… for this team. His post game just gets better and better, he’s a pure scorer and flat out needs more shots! In 14 minutes a game Kennedy Meeks scoring 8.0 points and shooting 61.8 percent from the field. The freshman has proven to be a real threat inside and with more opportunities he would easily put up double figures consistently. For a team who can struggle sometimes scoring, it would be wise to let the “big men eat”.

Make some free throws: The Tar Heels shoot a horrible 61.8 percent from the charity strike as a team. That’s just unacceptable. It’s has become an adventure when anyone other than Marcus Paige steps to the line. If Carolina has any plans on short or long-term success, improved free throw shooting will be a major part of it. The way fouls are being called, no team especially the short-handed Tar Heels can afford to continuously give possessions away. We’ve all seen what happens when you don’t make them.

Rebound: In the loss to UAB, Carolina was out rebounded 52-37, versus Michigan State the Heels won the battle on the boards 49-38 and came home with a victory. It that simple. This should be a good rebounding squad and they will have to be, because some teams who can really get after it, are coming up for the Heels, like Kentucky and their beast Julius Randle. If UNC continues to attack the glass like they did against Michigan State, similar results will follow.
